A rationale for Canadian studies and outlines of appropriate content for various grade levels are presented. The book is designed to help teachers, curriculum planners, and teacher educators in preparing effective Canadian studies programs. Chapter I offers a discussion of the need for pan-Canadian understanding. Canadian studies can help young Canadians to raise their perspectives from local, regional, or ethnocentric concerns to national and international levels, and to better understand their own society's problems. Chapter II identifies four components of a complete Canadian studies program: the Canadian environment, structure and functioning of government, characteristics of the economic system, and public issues. Primary and elementary grade content is outlined in Chapter III. Subject matter focuses on citizenship education and should include study of community participation, public controversy, public affairs, history, and geography. Chapters IV through VII suggest concepts and topics for secondary grade study of Canadian environment, politics, economics, and public issues, respectively. Among these topics are natural resources, the political party system, intergovernmental relations, national income, foreign economic relations, technology, and biculturalism. (AV)
