Developing Learning Activity Packages in Social Studies Education.
Guenther, John E.; Hansen, Patricia A.
The document provides instruction on developing learning packages for classroom use in social studies. The rationale is that learning packages provide a workable means of individualizing classroom instruction. The document is presented in 12 chapters. Chapter I offers an overview of learning packages, suggests ideas necessary to package development, and identifies level, subject area, and prerequisites. Chapters II through VI examine initial assumptions, goals and objectives, and offer a flow chart for development and evaluation. Chapters VII and VIII, the bulk of the guide, present guidelines for developing core and supplementary ideas. First, outcomes are specified. Second, core ideas are identified. A core idea is the major focus of the package. Supplementary ideas are used to support or teach the core idea. Package components which develop and implement the subject matter include package objectives, pre-assessment, activities, self-check, post-assessment, additional activities, and references. Chapter IX outlines a final package form that is easily reproducible for use in other classrooms. Chapters X and XI give guidelines for developing a teacher's guide. The final chapter presents sample development and evaluation forms. (Author/BC)
