Improving Teaching in Higher Education.

Intended for inexperienced teachers in higher education to be used in conjunction with a staff training program, information is presented on: teaching and learning principles; teaching methods; tutoring, counseling and student problems; student assessment; behavioral objectives; designing a course; and evaluation of teaching. Focus is on teaching methods, especially lecturing and small group discussions, which are discussed in some detail with emphasis on strategies for and evaluation of effectiveness. More independent teaching methods are also reviewed such as simulations, games, role plays, programmed learning, reading, guided study, peer teaching, practicals, and projects. The evaluation of teacher effectiveness is addressed throughout the book and separately at the end. Criteria for assessment are listed, evaluation models are reviewed, and two main areas of evaluation are examined, one concerned with processes, the other with outcomes. Sample evaluation questionnaires and checklists are given, an appendix with recommended readings is included, and references are listed at the end of each chapter. (JMD)
