The demand, supply, sponsorship, and need for staff development and training activities for middle-level collegiate administrators is examined and discussed. Data were gathered by a survey research questionnaire and structured interviews with 200 administrators and faculty at 20 colleges and universities, and an extensive review of the literature. Questions addressed include the following: What staff development and training activities for collegiate middle-managers are currently available and will be sought in the future? What new areas of expertise will be required by institutions? What areas of training and development are desired by middle-level administrators? How are older staff trained for new responsibilities or retrained to keep up with their fields? Who sponsors training? (Author)
