The five parts of this book reflect a number of important issues and concerns that have emerged in the past decade. Part one ("Principle and Theory in Language Teaching") reflects the profession's concern with acquiring a stronger theoretical base for its practical operations. This section covers second language learning, theoretical models of the language learning/teaching process, applied linguistics definition, and the acquisition, learning, and teaching of language. Part two ("Methodology and Teacher Training") deals with methodology in Britain and the United States in English language teaching, basic principles of teacher training, and teaching the spoken language. Part three ("Special Problems in ELT") offers a major analysis of English for special purposes and a study of the learning and teaching of reading. Part four ("The Language We Teach") looks at the many varieties of English and offers detailed frameworks for describing them. A brief contrastive description of British and American English is also given. Part five ("Some Technical Questions") deals with language laboratories and the need for cost-effectiveness studies in the teaching of foreign languages. (JF)
