Research studies on the affective elements of reading ability show a definite relationship between self concept and reading achievement in children. Based on these findings, this study investigated the relationship between reading achievement, self concept level, and perception of reading ability in college freshmen. Forty-six students from a language skills center in a two year college were tested on a standardized reading test, a standardized self concept scale, and an informal attitude inventory. The data were correlated using two different correlation procedures. Although there was a slight positive relationship between the male subjects' perception of their reading ability and their self concept level, the study results indicate no significant relationship between reading achievement and self concept level. These findings suggest that reading achievement is not a factor on which self concept depends at the college level. (MAI)
