Composite Predictions of Early Reading Success.
Leary, Patricia; Magoon, A. Jon
A functional prediction scheme was sought for use in kindergarten which would have good predictive power for future reading achievement and be easy and quick to administer and score, inexpensive, and conducive to classroom use. A group of 21 kindergarten children was tested for reading readiness, intelligence, and psycholinguistic ability. Their teachers also completed a special reading readiness checklist for each student. Results indicated that the criterion measure did not yield an assessment significantly superior to teacher judgments; the prediction ability of kindergarten teachers is better than that of teachers at any other grade level. Kindergarten teachers have access to information that is not easily codable, and a carefully constructed teacher checklist will enhance their predictive ability. A judicious combination of psychometric measures with careful teacher judgment will yield good results in prediction of reading achievement. (Tables of findings, a readiness checklist for teachers, and a complete variable list are included.) (DF)
