Trends in Research on Neural Mechanisms in Processing and Storage of Information. (A Report Prepared for the National Institute of Education.)
Rosenzweig, Mark R.; Bennett, Edward L.
The authors surveyed experts in the field of neuro-behavioral research to determine the directions of progress being made in increasing understanding of neural processing and storage of information. Based on this investigation, their report presents examples of research being pursued in this area. The authors see neuro-behavioral research leading to important benefits in preventing or ameliorating the conditions of persons who suffer from impaired learning and memory and also in facilitating or improving the learning of normal individuals. Among the possible research applications discussed are: (1) combating effects of dietary deficiencies on learning and memory; (2) alleviating and preventing mental retardation; (3) preventing or retarding senile decline; and (4) improving the education of normal children in regular schools. The report concludes with suggestions to foster development of research on neural mechanisms of learning and memory and its application. (Author/DOW)
