Evaluating Service-Learning Programs. A Guide for Program Coordinators.
ACTION, Washington, DC. National Student Volunteer Program.
Designed for coordinators of student volunteer programs (experiential learning through community service), this manual provides information on some of the basic research approaches and tools which can be used to analyze a program's activities and effectiveness. The major areas discussed include the following: the reasons for and resources available to design and implement evaluations; the steps in preparing for an evaluation; developing an evaluation plan; designing data collection instruments and gathering information; compiling and analyzing information; and using evaluation results. Concluding the manual is a case study showing how one student volunteer program developed and implemented an evaluation. The appendixes provide a sample evaluation plan worksheet, a chart that summarizes some of the advantages and disadvantages or problems generally associated with various data collection mechanisms, a brief guide to interviewing including how to conduct oneself as an interviewer, and methods for selecting a sample population. A short bibliography and a glossary of evaluation terms are also included. (Related documents are CE 017 214, which deals with planning of student volunteer programs, and CE 017 212, twelve case histories of high school volunteer components.) (JH)
