This document contains twelve case histories of high school courses that have experiential learning components in which students are involved as volunteers in community service programs. Each case history is presented in the same format: (1) a brief description of the school and course; (2) a condensed explanation of the benefits to the community and to the students; (3) rationale and origins of the program; (4) how arrangements are made including recruitment methods, orientation, and additional training provided for the students; (5) how the course functions (details on the curriculum and the way in which the classroom and volunteer activities are organized and carried out); and (6) how the program is evaluated by teachers, agency, supervisors, and student volunteers. Representative case history titles are as follows: Students in an Ecology Course Work on Community Environmental Problems, Spanish Course Includes a Cross-Cultural Tutoring Component, Psychology Students Work in Nursing Homes, and Social Studies Course in Child Development Offers Tutoring in a Lower School.
