The Math Anxiety Program: Its Genesis and Evaluation In Continuing Education for Women.
Hendel, Darwin D.
The University of Minnesota's Math Anxiety Program consisted of four components: (1) the diagnostic clinic tested the participants' mathematical ability and level of math anxiety and provided an overview of the program; (2) three courses, from arithmetic to college algebra, with specially selected instructors were made available to the participants; (3) the support group provided opportunities for the participants to identify, discuss, and re-examine their attitudes toward mathematics; and (4) tutors provided additional help. Two background questionnaires, five anxiety scales, and one to two mathematics achievement tests were administered to the 71 participants in the diagnostic clinic. Results of the questionnaires, scales and tests are reported item-by-item. Comments regarding the students' experiences and attitudes and their parents' attitudes are included. It appears that mathematics anxiety is not isolated, but tends to be related to anxiety about tests or of negative evaluation. In general, the program was well received by the participants and judged to have favorable results. (CTM)
