World Population and Beyond: A Teaching Strategy for Global Studies [And] Interchange. Population Education Newsletter. Vol. 7, No. 2, May 1978 [And] 1977 World Population Data Sheet.
Clark, Leon E.; And Others
The unit contains a teacher's guide, student reading materials, and data sheets about a variety of worldwide demographic and economic variables. Designed for students in junior high through college, its goals are to encourage students to analyze the causes and consequences of world population and economic trends, and to detect interrelationships among data. Behavioral objectives include locating data in tables, comparing data, calculating population doubling time, and deriving a set of criteria for determining social development. The teacher's guide contains procedural directions for guiding students through surveys and activities based on seven data sheets (which are included in the guide). The newsletter contains articles for supplementary reading. Content includes a review of various theories about population growth and rate calculation, and a description of current legislation by the U. S. government concerning population education programs. Also included is a 1977 World Population Data Sheet. Statistics from this poster help students complete unit activities. The poster presents data on 12 factors for 161 countries. Data include estimated population in 1977, birth rate, death rate, rate of national increase, infant mortality rate, life expectancy at birth, urban population, and per capita gross national product.
