CbN Community Forum Sourcebook.
Stevens, Mary A.
In 1977 and 1978, Black Hawk College sponsored two series of community discussion forums paralleling the year's Courses by Newspaper (CbN). With the fall series, based on "Crime and Justice in America," Black Hawk became one of eleven national demonstration models. In the spring, the college sponsored "The Impact of Mass Media on American Life," paralleling the CbN "Popular Culture: Mirror of American Life." An explanation and models of procedures used in these two community forums are included in this sourcebook, which is divided into six sections. After the first explanatory section, section 2 covers co-sponsors in terms of what they offer the forum, what the forum offers them, who makes the best co-sponsors, and how to approach and work with them. Section 3 deals with the humanities and the humanist moderator with respect to moderator training sessions, college responsibilities in working with humanists, what methods were effective in Black Hawks' two community forums, and what aspects of the moderators' function could have been clarified. Forum formats such as town meetings and panel, film, and small group discussions are reviewed in section 4. Section 5 treats publicity efforts through co-sponsors, press releases, newspaper advertisements, and news coverage. Section 6 presents sample materials used by Black Hawk in setting-up their forums.
