Fisher, Stephen H.
Written as a guide to be used in the admission and placement of students from the United Kingdom in U.S. institutions of higher education, this study discussed the educational system of the United Kingdom. The British approach to education is compared to and explained in relation to the U.S. approach. Following a summary of the organization of education in the United Kingdom (England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland), information is provided on: primary education; secondary education including a description of the schools, the General Certificate of Education, the Certificate of Secondary Education, and other examinations; higher education including developments, trends, and the Council of National Academic Awards; teaching qualifications, college of further education, the polytechnics, and the universities; and professional qualifications. A guide to analysis of credentials is provided in the chapter dealing with placement recommendations. Addresses of examining boards, colleges of education, polytechnics, colleges of further education, art, drama, and music, universities, and national and professional bodies are appended. (SPG)
