Health Services Research Components of Master's Degree Programs in Health Services Administration.
Peterson, Kent W.; Lamont, Valarie C.
The status of health services components of master's degree programs in health services administration is described. Included are student coursework in related subjects such as quantitative methods, statistics, program evaluation, research design, operations research, and systems analysis, as well as student and faculty research. A general survey of 65 established graduate-level programs in the U.S. and Canada and an in-depth analysis of 15 programs were conducted. From the general survey, programs that required students to complete a major research project (essay/thesis) or offer students a thesis option for graduation are identified and student research topics are categorized. From the in-depth analysis the following data is presented: status of research activities, future research plans, provisions of research opportunities for faculty members, faculty research activities, required research courses, and research project/thesis requirement for students. The appendices contain: study sample of 65 graduate programs in health administration; study sample of 15 programs selected for in-depth analysis; masters' student thesis topics; faculty research topics; and recommended curriculum components.
