This case study describes the development and management of academic and research space at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It illustrates through historical and current examples the ways in which the institution, with its principle emphasis on science and technology, manages over four million square feet of academic and research space in a highly centralized but flexible manner. Discussed are such matters as the campus history, building design, patterns of building use, the time-frame for change, communications and interaction, territoriality, the human dimension, administration of space, and financial procedures.
