Miniconsultation on the Mental and Physical Health Problems of Black Women.
Black Women's Community Development Foundation, Inc., Washington, DC.
The Black Women's Community Development Foundation (BWCDF) examined the mental and physical health issues confronting black women. BWCDF chose to examine these issues through a "miniconsultation," a gathering of some 60 health care professionals, sociologists, educators and others who for two days comprehensively shared their experiences, their concerns, and their areas of expertise. Participants evaluated the relationship between the mental and physical health of black women. The improvement of the health of black women demands program approaches which reflect economics, politics, psychology and other disciplines, as well as medicine. The miniconsultation focused on four health care areas: hypertension; cancers and fibroids; sterilization; and suicide and depression. Each subject area was studied in terms of the following: (1) relevance of the health care issue for black women, (2) current data, (3) areas of needed research, and (4) directions for action. New areas suggested for further research include diabetes, training of blacks in behavior modification, and fetal tissue research. (Author/AM)
