A Large-Scale Evaluation of Preservice Teacher Education Programs.
Webb, Clark D.; And Others
The purpose of this study was to provide an overall appraisal of preservice teacher education programs by teachers and administrators in the Utah public schools. A random stratification sample based on education level (elementary and secondary), locale (urban vs. rural), and position (teacher, principal, or superintendent) was obtained from the Utah School Board personnel computer tape file. Statistical results of a questionnaire confirmed findings reported in personal interviews that teachers, principals, and superintendents felt strongly the need to improve preservice programs. Teachers, principals, and superintendents differed somewhat in their responses to the majority of teaching skills. Principals and superintendents tended to rate the preparation level of their teachers higher than teachers themselves did. The results of an analysis of the survey indicated that in the opinion of superintendents, principals, and teachers, the preservice training programs experienced by teachers in Utah public schools have not adequately prepared teachers for their teaching experiences.
