The guidebook is designed to help school districts plan humanistic education programs. Humanistic education is defined as a commitment to education and practice in which the teaching/learning process emphasizes the individual's freedom, value, dignity, and integrity. Humanistic education aims to develop the learner's potentials, help students to achieve self-actualization, master basic skills, and develop personal values. Among the reliable ways of assessing humanistic objectives are behavioral approaches, inferential techniques, case history evidence, professional opinion, and self-evaluation. Teacher behaviors that facilitate humanistic education include less teacher domination, destructive criticism, and emphasis on failure; clearly defined goals; and encouragement of children's free expression and shared evaluation. Included is a checklist which analyzes learning activities, student interaction, teacher attitudes, materials and facilities, and other school personnel. Scoring suggestions and field-tested uses of the checklist are also presented. (Author/AV)
