The document presents background information and activities for use by secondary school social studies teachers as they incorporate material on ethnic conflict into the curriculum. Ethnic conflicts are interpreted as hostilities which are either solely based upon or accentuated by ethnic differences. Examples are violence in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, and Spain and political movements for separatism in Canada and Belgium. Major objectives of the teaching guide are to increase students awareness of ethnic identity and conflict, the multiethnic nature of the world, reasons for ethnic conflict, and to develop approaches to channel ethnic differences toward cooperation. The document describes 15 activities. Each activity includes information on background, objectives, grade level, required time and materials, procedure, and discussion questions. Topics include dimensions of global conflict, cultural differences within the community, policymaking in a multiethnic society, ethnic communities of the world, and loss in human and economic terms for ethnic conflict. Activities involve students in map and globe work, community surveys, data analysis, comparative analysis, simulation, role-play, and brainstorming. Thirty-two handouts comprising assignments, vocabulary, and background information, accompany the activities. A bibliography and evaluation questionnaire conclude the document. (Author/DB)
