Study on the Development of a Network for Terminology Information and Documentation.
Felber, Helmut
A study was undertaken by the International Information Centre for Terminology (Infoterm) to examine the feasibility of establishing a network for the coordination of terminological work and the required technical and organizational structure for this type of collaboration. The first half of the study (1) provides an historical perspective of achievements and activities in terminological work to-date in five major areas--theory, terminological and lexicographical principles, preparation of terminologies, documentation in terminology, and training; (2) enumerates the various users of terminology and their requirements; (3) discusses Infoterm's past and present activities; and (4) provides an overview of areas where cooperation and planning in terminology are needed. Infoterm's proposals for establishing the network, which are presented in the second half of the study, incorporate recommendations from a panel of experts convened by UNESCO to evaluate the draft proposal (see related document). The new network would be known as TermNet and would function as an individual unit in the general information program of UNESCO with Infoterm serving as an international coordinating unit. Described are the network's aims and objectives, membership, benefits derived from establishing such a network, demands and restraints that members would have to accept in order to maximize opportunities for cooperation, and the role of an advisory panel.
