A Dropout is a Dropout is a Dropout....A Comparison of Four Different Types of University Dropouts.
Simpson, Carl; And Others
Berkeley undergraduates were surveyed in 1970 and again in 1973 to identify determinants of the decision to leave college among four types of leavers: failing transfers, failing dropouts, transfers in good standing, and dropouts in good standing. The following student characteristics are analyzed: family background, academic preparation, family values, personality maturity, relationship to family, commitment to college, educational aspirations, social integration, satisfaction, orientation to college, political orientation, and alternative lifestyles. Those leaving in good standing more often hold nonconventional political and lifestyle orientations, and are less often vocationally oriented than those who remain enrolled. It is suggested that these persons have departed from popularly intitutionalized life-cycles and are therefore less constrained to remain in college. (Author/SPG)
