Individualizing Language Instruction: Strategies and Methods.
Disick, Renee S.
The purpose of the book is to define individualized foreign language instruction and to consider problems commonly associated with its implementation and management. It is divided into three parts: (1) Theoretical Considerations, (2) Management Considerations and (3) Teaching Considerations. Part One considers an overview of individualized instruction, contemporary theories of language learning, humanistic theories, curriculum development, learning packets and instruction styles. Part Two deals with staffing and equipping an individualized program, making the transition, humanizing relationships, overcoming common management problems, testing, grading, and program evaluation. Part Three treats in detail techniques in the individualization of instruction in pronunciation, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, civilization and literature. The chapters may be read in sequence or at random, as need or interest requires. In addition to the sections in the body of the book, there are several appendices containing sample classroom materials of practical use to the language teacher, including planning and evaluation forms, sample dialogues, lessons and assignments, and French expressions useful for students in class. While the book defines some basic issues, raises some important questions and suggests some answers, it does not pretend to respond to all possible contingencies. The practical considerations discussed here are intended to be used and adapted by individual teachers according to their professional judgment. (AMH)
