Career Education and Foreign Languages. Enriching and Explaining the Foreign Language Program. Foreign Languages in Virginia Schools, No. 7.
Virginia State Dept. of Education, Richmond. Foreign Language Service.
This publication is one of a series designed to inform and assist those responsible for foreign language instruction, including teachers, administrators, supervisors, and those engaged in teacher education. The complete series serves as a curriculum guide. The format of the series is such that it can be revised so as to keep materials current. Each publication is punched so that it may be placed in a binder. Part one of this volume defines career education, provides a rationale for it in reference to foreign language study, discusses to whom foreign language career education should be directed, lists and discusses careers using foreign language skills, and provides suggested strategies and activities. After a list of general strategies and activities for emphasizing career education, a two-stage exercise is given for career awareness, and nine sample exercises are given for career exploration. Part two discusses ways to enrich the foreign language program through extracurricular activities and ways of informing students, school administrators and the community of the nature and relevance of foreign language study. The following target groups are discussed in relation to these efforts: students, guidance counselors, teachers (of subjects other than foreign languages), administrators, feeder school personnel and students, school board personnel, college and university instructors, and the community. A number of activities and techniques are described: fairs and festivals, assemblies, banquets, foreign language day or week, career day, visiting the feeder schools, the exchange student, visitors in the foreign language classroom, using display space, using languages in the halls, interdisciplinary ventures, assisting public service agencies, communication by letter, newsletters, school newspapers, public news media, and brochures. A bibliography is provided for each of the two sections of this volume. (KM)
