The Arts in Education. NSBA Research Report 1978-2.
National School Boards Association, Washington, DC.
The bulk of this report is a digest of "Coming to Our Senses: The Significance of the Arts in American Education," the 1976 product of the blue ribbon Arts, Education, and Americans Panel chaired by David Rockefeller, Jr. The chapters reproduced here concentrate on what is being done in art education in public elementary and secondary schools. The status of individual fine arts disciplines (drama, the visual arts, music, dance, creative writing, and media) are examined. Teacher preparation for art education, artists as teachers, and administrators' roles in art education are reviewed. The report describes various kinds of school-community cooperative ventures to foster the arts, including apprenticeship and appreciation programs, cultural identity programs, and leisure time activities. The recommendations of the panel are also included. (Author/DS)
