Twenty college age males' hand shrugs, face-play manipulations, and frequency and duration of mutual eye contact were recorded in response to a female counterpart who varied her assertiveness and attractiveness in a two by two factorial design. Mutual eye contact, which increased under attractive conditions, was a useful negative correlate of anxiety because the more anxious individuals, both generally and contextually, decreased the frequency and duration of their mutual eye contact. The hand shrug emblems and the face-play adapters, however, were not useful indicators of anxiety because they did not reflect significant change under conditions of situational anxiety. The implications of these results on correlates of anxiety contradict some previous research and indicate a need for future research on both male and female subjects. (MAI)
