Pioneer CESA Guidance Project: A Staff Development Program for School Counselors. In-Service Training.
Bryant, Brenda; Andrews, Theodore
The role of the school counselor is considerably more diverse and complex than simply serving student-clients. While the serving of student-clients is a vital function, it is also almost impossible with the existing counselor-student ratio to expect counselors to serve the needs of all student-clients. Likewise, the effectiveness of the counseling program and the instructional program tend to suffer if they are viewed as discrete rather than compatible functions of the school. The counselor thus has two main reasons for conducting in-service training for faculty and staff: (1) to extend the impact of the counseling function by training others in the faculty and staff to support and elaborate, and (2) to improve the articulation of the counseling and instructional programs. This module is designed to help counselors develop skill in conducting these sessions. This document is one of seven staff development programs which target performance skills of school counselors. The programs include the competency areas of planning, individual counseling, group facilitation, in-service training, consultation, information processing, and legal/ethical concerns. (Author/LEB)
