Television Production. A Career Development Unit.
Burton, Virginia; Hogan, William
In an attempt to build career development activities into the English curriculum this hands-on television production course focusing on video tape production was offered as an English elective in a Minnesota high school. The course was developed to emphasize the following objectives: (1) to develop and apply the interpersonal competency skills required in a particular career and life-style; (2) to acquire increasing knowledge of educational vocational possibilities, as well as experience in work settings; (3) to further develop basic language arts skills; and (4) to acquire knowledge and make decisions about future careers. In addition, the course has a two-fold purpose in that students can play an individual job role as part of a production team as well as participate in a group investigation of a particular career. The activities are divided into the following four phases: introduction; preparation (research, writing of narration, planning for visual inputs, production of visual inputs, and revision of script); tape production; and evaluation. The format of each phase includes a broad objective, performance objectives, behavioral objectives, time schedules, and appended instructional materials. (BM)
