A Model for Career Related School-Community Exchanges & Internships.
Henriksen, Dorothy, Ed.; Larsen, Judy, Ed.
A project is reported that has been in effect for two years in the Roseville, Minnesota, Area Public Schools to provide interested school staff and community people a chance to exchange career roles for varying periods of time, ranging from one day to several weeks. The report contains all memos, application forms, announcements, and exchange/internship reaction forms which are used in the program. In addition, a program outline and a timeline for exchanges and internships are given. A summary of exchange internship proposals for 1975-76 is included. Some examples of proposals are the following: a high school principal proposed to spend two to five days observing business administrators in several business settings in order to see techniques used by industry for dealing with personnel; two high school English teachers proposed spending five to twenty days interning at several local TV and radio stations; and a high school industrial arts teacher proposed a two-to-five-day internship with a supervisor or worker in a graphic arts or printing firm. In the appendix a sample case study is given of an internship application, a learning contract, and a project evaluation report. The case study is of a high school home economics teacher who spent two days in the costume design and wardrobe workroom of a dinner theater. The program provides for the earning of recertification units or college credit to those who wish a more in-depth experience. (BB)
