Changing Boston's Schools: A Survival Kit for Parents and Students.
Clifford, Laura; And Others
In this document some of the issues and events surrounding school desegregation in Boston are addressed in an effort to help affected parents and students. Information is provided on the legal rights of parents who have been harassed for cooperating with desegregation laws. Some notes of a coordinator describing the busing of students and parent and student participation in school integration are presented. Parental involvement in desegregation coordination and the forming of community biracial councils is described. Also included is the account of a white parent who was initially fearful of sending her daughter to a desegregated high school. The Massachusetts State civil rights laws are reviewed for the benefit of parents. A section on student rights is also presented. Traditional, cluster, and open space approaches in school programs are briefly outlined. Throughout this work, community resources for facilitating school integration are listed. (GC)
