The report discusses and presents tables of statistical data related to the voting rate in the 1976 Presidential election. Focusing upon social and demographic characteristics of the civilian noninstitutional population of voting age in 1976, the report presents data by age, race, sex, family income, education, geographic region, household relationship, and marital status. Data were taken from the Current Population Survey (CPS) conducted by the Bureau of the Census. Highlights of the report include: (1) the voting rate in the 1976 Presidential election was lower than in any Presidential election since 1948, in spite of the fact that more people voted than ever before; (2) an increase in the proportion of the electorate under 35 years old (traditionally, a low-turnout age group), has contributed to the decline in voter turnout since the 1964 Presidential election; (3) the voting rates of men and women are now approximately equal; (4) voting turnout for both whites and blacks in 1976 was about 10 percentage points below their respective levels in the 1964 election; (5) voting turnout for persons of Spanish origin was six percentage points below that of 1972.
