Cross-Cultural Learning and Self-Growth: Getting to Know Ourselves and Others.
Sikkema, Mildred; Niyekawa-Howard, Agnes M.
This book reports on a field training project in social work education which emphasized learning to deal with cultural differences. Objectives of the project were to achieve an understanding of another culture and to move toward personal growth by becoming aware of one's cultural and personal biases. The book contains seven chapters. Chapter I introduces the project and discusses the need for cultural awareness. Chapter II examines the theoretical bases of the project, describes the project, and lists its components. Chapter III emphasizes the cognitive learning aspect of the project which included a pre-training seminar and an integration seminar. Chapter IV examines the design of the cultural field experience and gives a detailed account of the stages the two student groups went through in the experiential, cross-cultural learning process. Many examples of the student activities are given. Chapter V summarizes the overall student learning by focusing on the students' perceptions of the project and their personal growth as a result of participating. Chapter VI describes three variations of the original project. The last chapter gives a brief summary of the project, suggests modifications in the design, and discusses some implications for professional education in social work. (Author/JK)
