Social Studies Program Guide, 9-12: The Senior High School.
Spokane School District 81, WA.
This is the last of four guides which identify the scope, sequence, goals, and resources for the social studies program of the Spokane public schools. It suggests materials, resources, and activities related to social studies knowledge and skill development for grades 9 through 12. Lessons on all social science disciplines are outlined with particular emphasis on political science, sociology, anthropology, history, and culture. The major objective of the curriculum is to help students become effective citizens. The document is presented in five sections. Section I presents overviews and charts listing basic, required, and elective social science skills. Section II stresses 9th grade activities and objectives related to United States and Washington state history. Competencies slated for mastery at this level include ability to evaluate data, incorporate new information, identify erroneous information, interpret and draw charts and graphs, identify values and goals that influence decisions, and demonstrate procedural skills of group discussion. Section III consists of an 11th grade program guide to American government and a history of 20th century America. Students are expected to master skills in discussion, reporting, critical thinking, organizing and using data, providing definitions, and using maps, graphs, and charts. Section IV concentrates on skills and objectives related to economics and contemporary world affairs for 12th grade students. Textbook and media resources are suggested. Section V lists goals and resources for the following elective social studies topics: world history (a grade 10 elective), sociology/anthropology, and psychology. An explanation of procedures which will be used to evaluate the K-12 social studies program concludes the document. (Author/DB)
