Social Studies Program Guide, 3-6: Intermediate Grades.
Spokane School District 81, WA.
This curriculum guide suggests materials, resources, and activities related to social studies knowledge and skill development for grades 4-6. Third grade activities are also included to inform intermediate teachers what has been previously taught. Part of a series of social studies program guides designed to be used in the Spokane public schools for grades K-12, this component outlines lessons on all social science disciplines, with particular emphasis on psychology, economics, geography; social studies skills; and decision making. The major objective of the curriculum is to help students become responsible citizens. Topics at the intermediate level include the dignity of work, identification of personal talents, basic needs, differences between fact and opinion, access to opportunity, community well-being, land use, natural and man-made boundaries, peer groups, and limited resources. A description of the subject area and a chart of sequential skills begin each section, followed by an outline of activities, resources, and objectives pertinent to each grade level. Learning activities involve students in library work; making logical estimates on the basis of available information; note taking, paraphrasing written materials; drawing historical timelines; interpreting numerical symbols; keeping a checking account; and writing a one-page biography of an important historical figure. A directory of program materials by grade level and evaluation information conclude the document. (Author/DB)
