Math Concept Learning by Spanish Speaking Children: Progress Report No. 1.
Coffland, Jack A.; Cuevas, Gilberto J.
The basic scope of this study is to investigate the learning of mathematical concepts by primary grade students whose native language is other than English (Spanish). The efforts of the investigators in the study and the analysis of students' behaviors are to be concentrated in the areas of addition and subtraction operations, concept of number, concept of numeration, and the language involved in mathematical concepts. A summary of the tasks accomplished by the end of three months is presented along with a projection of the activities which are expected to be completed during the period of the time between the three- and six-month reports. A first-grade classroom from a predominantly Spanish-speaking elementary school in Dade County, Florida and one from a predominantly English-speaking elementary school were selected for purposes of the study. A summary description of the participating student sample at each of the schools is given along with a discussion of the initial testing procedures. A survey of the current Dade County Systems Mathematics curriculum was completed and a detailed list of objectives is presented. The pilot test form of a teacher survey of the perceived difficulty level of systems objectives is also included. (Author/MN)
