This publication is a summary report of a project to identify the roles and functions of sanitarians. Described are the project's function, work, members, methodology, and responsibilities. One of the important works of this project is a role delineation model. For three entry-level positions selected from the sanitarian career category, the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for practitioner proficiency are communicated through detailed performance statements. These statements, which comprise the role delineation model, apply to practitioners employed in federal, state and local governmental settings and private industry. The report also includes recommendations for development of curriculum design, recommendations on credentialing of environmental health personnel, and an evaluation by the project director of the role delineation study.
