Migrant Institute (Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, June 26-28, 1974).
Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit 16, Lewisburg, PA.
The 3-day Institute investigated the adequacy of social agencies and institutions which provide services and assistance to migrant families during their stay in Pennsylvania. Institute activities included presentations by three principal speakers, followed by panel discussions and "action workshops". The workshops provided an opportunity for participants to informally meet with the principal speakers and discuss their presentation and any aspect of the migrant situation in Pennsylvania and outside the state. The speakers addressed the migrant subculture; the differences between the migrant subculture and the local community; and the services to migrant families which are presently available from agencies and institutions in Pennsylvania, suggesting areas for improvement. After each day, participants completed an assessment of the day's activities. In addition, they completed a more general evaluation form on the last day. Participation in the Institute was indicated as a valuable experience for clarifying problems, improving understandings of the migrant situation in the State, and providing information about available services for migrants. The most frequently voiced criticism was that farmworkers themselves were not present. This report summarizes the Institute's program. Appended are the Institute's agenda; the edited texts of the three principal presentations; copies of announcements and invitations; lists of radio stations, newspapers, and individuals receiving information about the Institute; and copies of the evaluation forms.
