Building Bridges of Understanding. People of Thailand.
Brigham Young Univ., Provo, UT. Language Research Center.
This book attempts to provide cultural information that will enable an American to communicate effectively with people in Thailand. The book discusses differences between American and Thai culture in such areas as food, laws, customs, religion, language, dress, and basic attitudes. Background information is given on Thailand and the characteristics of the Thai people. Problems in intercultural communication are presented via situations built around such themes as nationalism, the family, fate, and saving face. Facial expressions and gestures are also discussed. "Survival" phrases in Thai and translations of common signs are given. A brief bibliography completes the volume. (CFM)
