The Teaching of Latin in the Elementary and Secondary School. A Handbook for Educators and Administrators.
LeBovit, Judith B.
This handbook is designed for educators, administrators, and others who are interested in developing Latin programs in elementary and secondary schools. It is divided into four parts. Part One, "How Beginning Latin Actually Works," discusses a typical beginning Latin class session, linguistic and humanistic program goals, the methodology for implementing these goals, and "Via Romana," a beginning Latin curriculum. Part Two, "Linguistic Effectiveness of Latin Study: Measurements and Proof," presents evidence of the value of the study of Latin. Part Three discusses the humanistic significance of Latin. Part Four, "Program Implementation," deals with budget, the recruiting and training of teachers, and the promotion of Latin in communities. The appendices include (1) "A Study of the Effect of Latin Instruction on English Reading Skills of Sixth Grade Students in the Public Schools of the District of Columbia, School Year 1970-71"; (2) "The Humanistic Significance of Latin: Five Addresses by Dr. Judith Le Bovit"; (3) "Professional Meetings Addressed by Dr. Judith Le Bovit on the D.C. Latin Program"; and (4) "Two Reports on Visits to D.C. Latin FLES Classes." (CFM)
