This report describes a study conducted to discover whether children with language delay would respond differently from normal children on two identically itemed tests of knowledge of adjectives and prepositions, one of which using objects as stimuli and the other using pictorial stimuli. It was hypothesized that the test using objects would be less difficult for the children with language delay than would the test using pictorial stimuli. The subjects were 15 children with normally developing language skills and seven children with language delay; all subjects were four or five years old. The report presents the test results for both groups and a case by case summary for the children with language delay; it then notes that an analysis of the results revealed no significant differences in children's performance based on presentation model and no clear error patterns relating to stimulus modes. Appendixes present the test responses of the children with language delay and provide language samples for subjects in the study. (GW)
