As part of the community service program of a community college, courses in world literature were taught to residents of two nursing homes on a non-credit, tuition-free basis. This paper explains the origin of the project, course organization, types of subjects taught in response to student needs, and types of evaluative instruments completed by the instructor, by nursing home personnel, and by students in order to determine the effectiveness of the program. The paper also points out the potential value of such programs in helping prevent senility, noting the current theories that the processes of senility can be arrested and even reversed. It shows how such programs can be designed to meet the primary needs of nursing home residents and describes results of the program evaluation and their implications for future program planning and design.
