The status of desegregation in 50 large American cities is examined along with state policy which affects this status. Desegregation in 17 cities with full scale desegregation is operating peacefully. The 18 moderately desegregated cities are in a state of flux. State activity on behalf of essentially desegregated cities is most evident in these cities. The cities presently involved in litigation will be moderately desegregated in the near future. The direction of movement is toward desegregation in cities. Another discussion in this document includes a historical and community analysis of the desegregation experiences of School District 151 in Chicago. (Author/AM)
