American Indian Annotated Bibliography of Mental Health, Volume I.
Attneave, Carolyn L., Ed.; Kelso, Dianne R., Ed.
Presenting 250 abstracted entries and an additional 250 citations, this bibliography on American Indian mental health is derived from: personal collections; other bibliographies; dissertations, government documents; and five computerized bibliographic data banks. Included in this document are: (1) a user's guide to the bibliography; (2) a tribe and culture area index; (3) a subject index (descriptors with individual definitions); (4) an author index; and (5) an appendix which provides categorical listings of the descriptors used to index each citation. Each of the annotated citations includes: an author, title, date (the span is approximately 1940 through 1976 publications), publisher, identifier(s) (uncontrolled indexing terms such as tribal names); descriptors (controlled indexing terms); an abstract; and a section called "comments" (e.g., "The anthropological tone of the article which uses unfortunate terms such as 'primitive' and 'pre-scientific,' hurts the article whose attitude toward Navajo culture and traditional healing is basically positive.") The indexing vocabulary of 277 descriptors is grouped into the following 15 categories: mental health research; environment; population groups and developmental groups; mental health system; medical system; social work system; education system; religious system (non-Native); legal-correctional system; governmental system; program management and delivery of services; mental health problems and/or concerns; Native American coping mechanisms, norms, values, and cultural resources; Native American culture areas; and Native American Tribes.
