Hallau, Margaret Gardner
This paper discusses the use of assessment instruments at the preschool level and systematically reviews several measurement instruments used with young children. The first section briefly discusses the selection of educational objectives, consideration of alternative methods of collecting information about children, the selection of a specific instrument, and coordination among professionals. The second section, which contains the bulk of the paper, presents detailed analyses of 18 measurement instruments. Aspects of each instrument included in the analyses are: (1) publication information, (2) description, (3) validity, (4) examinee appropriateness, (5) reliability, replicability, and refinement, (6) teaching feedback, (7) useability, (8) retest potential and (9) summary. A series of charts comparing the instruments is also included. (JMB)
