As part of an on-going study, all 1,818 graduates and 6,847 non-graduates who left Bronx Community College (BCC) in 1975-76 were surveyed by mail, with a return of 1,681 responses representing 52.4% of graduate and 20% of the non-graduate sample. Findings included the following: (1) 63% of graduates and 48% of non-graduates responding continued their education within six months; (2) of graduates, 29% had taken remedial studies at BCC in reading and writing, and 44% in mathematics; (3) both groups felt remedial programs were very important; (4) non-graduates left college primarily for personal, family, health, or financial reasons, with the latter doubling since the end of free tuition; and (5) the majority of both groups were satisfied with the curriculum and instruction received at BCC and would repeat the experience. Of students continuing their education, 78% went to the City University of New York, and 12% to private colleges. Black and hispanic respondents were more apt to continue as full-time students than white students. On transfer, 35%-40% lost some credit, 15% were required to take remedial writing, 7% to take remedial reading, and 14% to take remedial mathematics. Of those seeking employment, 21% of graduates and 27% of non-graduates were unsuccessful, and half who found full-time jobs required more than two weeks to do so. Respondents felt more specific skills training was essential for obtaining employment. (RT)
