Feasibility Study of Postsecondary Education for Deaf People 1976-1977. Report VI: An Analysis of Postsecondary Education Resources in Maryland in Relationship to Needs of Deaf People.
Harkins, Judy
Public postsecondary educational resources in Maryland are summarized, with particular emphasis on the needs of deaf adults. Described are programs provided by adult education programs, community colleges, and the Maryland Rehabilitation Center. The needs of deaf adults for postsecondary occupational training are considered in terms of needs for support services, needed programs, and desirable characteristics of a postsecondary institution serving deaf students. It is concluded that the most efficient way to provide full support services would be a cooperative arrangement between one or more large community colleges and adult education programs in the same locality, with the Maryland Rehabilitation Center offering comprehensive services for deaf individuals with low educational potential. Appendixes include a map showing the locations of Maryland community colleges, a listing of present programs offered by Maryland community colleges, a list of adult programs, and a statement on the implications of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) for postsecondary education of deaf adults.
