Derived from the Greek "andros" (male) and "gyne" (female), the word "androgyny" etymologically embodies the two sexes reconciled in one. This paper examines the concept of androgyny and points out the advantages of an androgynous language that expands and diversifies the possibilities of human thought and behavior, instead of limiting and reducing them as does sexist language. The paper discusses the following topics: the roots of the concept of androgyny; attempts by present-day authors to create androgynous language patterns; the concept of androgyny as treated in recent literature; some differences between nonsexist language and androgynous semantics; androgyny as an emerging metaphor in theories of personality development; the implications of androgynous ethics in business and politics; and the potential of a society of androgynous people for achieving human reconciliation and survival.
