This report focuses primarily on the 1975 employment status of 1930-1974 recipients of doctorates in science and engineering residing in the United States. Approximately 63,400 persons of the 314,000 individuals on the 1975 Roster of Doctoral Scientists and Engineers compiled by the National Research Council were sampled. A variable sampling ratio was used so that the sample could be used to make estimates for small groups within the population such as older people and women. The response rate to the sampling questionnaire that was mailed was 69.2%. It was found that of the 265,000 doctoral scientists and engineers in the labor force in 1975, the unemployment rate was 1%; 9.4% were women who had an unemployment rate of 3%. Just under one-half were working in biosciences or physical sciences, over two-fifths were engaged primarily in research, and nearly three-fifths were employed at educational institutions. (MR)
