Report on the Ethnic Minority at the University of Utah with a Specific Look at the Health Sciences.
Martinez, Luciano S.
Although the Utah State Board of Education estimates that approximately 10% of the minority high school graduates enter post-secondary educational institutions, the University of Utah registration statistics indicate that only 1% complete requirements for a baccalaureate degree. Of the estimated 2,000 minorities enrolled in Utah's colleges and universities, only 5% are pursuing professional health science degrees. In September 1977, a survey was conducted to determine the number and degree programs of Chicanos, Blacks, Native Americans and Orientals enrolled in each college of the University of Utah for the past three years, minority recruitment and retention programs within each college, and why it was believed that minorities did or did not choose the respective college to matriculate in. It was found that few non-health science colleges even came close to having an equivalent percentage of minority students enrolled in their programs as there were minorities in the state. The majority of the colleges did not have minority recruitment or retention programs. Since 1969 the Colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, and Health had participated in various programs to increase the number of minority students and faculty. The College of Medicine had the best success ratio in developing recruitment, admission, and retention programs for minorities. Programs for minorities included the Health Science Summer Program, the University Tutoring Service, and the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs. (NQ)
