Multiplicity of Learning Centers (The How and Why Book).
Dehls, Bette F.
This booklet presents ideas for structuring the learning environment of early childhood classes based on the Tucson Early Education Model (TEEM). The goal of the TEEM approach is to help all children develop the desire and the capacity to learn for themselves. TEEM emphasizes the use of learning centers and guided individual selection and pacing of learning activities. The booklet describes the design of learning centers which promote development in four broad areas: language, motivation, intellectual experiences and societal arts and skills. Teachers' and children's roles and the mechanics of center selection and rotation are described, and educational theory reflected in the learning center approach is discussed. The second half of the booklet describes various learning centers which provide experiences with nature, stories, reading, discussions, kits, music, games, drama, creating and tasting. Each description includes the learning tasks involved, goals, options and possible extensions. (BD)
